Exemption Information

Senior Homestead Exemption

Homeowners age 65 or over can apply for the Seniors' Homestead Exemption. This exemption deducts $4,000 from the assessment prior to calculation of the property tax bill.

    Requirements:

  • Must be 65 years of age or older during the calendar year that the application is made.


  • Proof of age

  • Proof of ownership


  • Property must be owned and occupied by the applicant as their principal residence as of January 1st of each calendar year to get the full amount of the exemption. If you first own and occupy the property after January 1st, the exemption amount will be prorated the first year; after the first year, you will receive the full amount of the exemption.


  • Annual re-confirmation of eligibility


  • The exemption status form for reconfirmation of eligibility is mailed to senior citizens from the DuPage County offices every March or April.
